California Livestock Branding

California requires livestock brand registration through the CDFA Bureau of Livestock Identification. Brands must be renewed biennially by April 30. Brand inspection is required for cattle sales, out-of-state movement, and before slaughter.

How to Report
Report stolen or missing cattle to local law enforcement first. Law enforcement must notify CDFA BLI per Food & Agricultural Code 24104. CDFA publishes Missing or Stolen Cattle Bulletins.
